About Heidi

Hello! I’m Heidi. Here’s a little about me and my background as a therapist:

I’ve been interested in human psychology my whole life.  In 8th grade my nickname was the Class Counselor.  My goal was always to help humans find their own self-worth and self-confidence.

My first career was as a teacher of theatrical improvisation for kids and positive parenting techniques for parents.  Both of these tracks had the same intention - helping humans feel better and be healthier as they grow and develop.

In 2009 I was ready to take my skills and education to a higher level and enrolled at Antioch University in Seattle.  My program was for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy with a focus on Drama Therapy.

In 2012 I met my mentor, Jerry Saltzman, and was introduced to Treating Internalized Oppression.  Finally I was home.  Blending drama and improvisation with family systems theories and an instinctive understanding of the role oppression plays in the lives of all people, TIO makes everything make sense and opens the path to healing for my clients.

I graduated from Antioch University in Seattle in 2014, opened my clinical practice in 2015, started as professor at Antioch in 2016 and started teaching TIO after Jerry retired in 2017.

Clinical Practice

I work with individuals (of all ages), couples, and families. My approach comes from a humanistic and systemic perspective, situating each person’s experiences within the context of family relationships and societal and cultural influences. I am particularly sensitive to identity as an intersection of many different areas of internalized and culturally maintained oppression. The messages received from family and society create, reinforce and maintain the ways people have been taught to see themselves and, as a result, are influential in the experience of distress internally and within relationships.  I prioritize attuning and collaborating with each client and often utilize playful and embodied approaches to interrupting the patterns that lead to sadness, confusion, anxiety, internal and relational conflict, hopelessness, and overall lack of ease and comfort in one’s own skin.

When it seems appropriate I may offer drama therapy approaches. Neuroscience shows us that some deep hurts and unmet needs are held in a part of our brain that processes emotion and experience without processing words, these interventions explore emotional history without relying solely on "talk therapy".
